What Is It?

Understanding Scoping Reviews

A scoping review systematically maps the breadth of evidence on a topic — including study types, populations, and key concepts — rather than pooling outcomes or appraising individual study quality in depth. It answers what evidence exists and where are the gaps, rather than what is the pooled effect.

The JBI (Joanna Briggs Institute) methodology, reported using the PRISMA-ScR (Scoping Reviews) checklist, is now the accepted standard. Scoping reviews are increasingly used to justify a subsequent systematic review, inform guideline development, or characterise an emerging field before enough RCTs exist for meta-analysis.

How is a scoping review different from a systematic review?+

A systematic review answers a focused question and often pools results via meta-analysis, with formal risk-of-bias appraisal of each study. A scoping review maps the breadth of evidence on a broader question — what exists, what types of studies, where the gaps are — without necessarily appraising study quality in the same depth or pooling outcomes.

Do scoping reviews need PROSPERO registration?+

No — PROSPERO does not accept scoping review protocols. Registration is instead typically done via the Open Science Framework (OSF), and we handle this as part of protocol development where appropriate for your target journal.

What reporting guideline do you follow?+

PRISMA-ScR (the scoping-review extension of PRISMA), a 22-item checklist plus flow diagram, which is now expected by JBI-affiliated journals and increasingly requested by general biomedical and health-policy journals.

Can a scoping review lead into a full systematic review later?+

Yes — this is a common and JBI-endorsed pathway. A scoping review can establish that sufficient comparable studies exist to justify a systematic review, or identify the specific sub-question a systematic review should target.

What topics are suitable for a scoping review?+

Emerging or broad topics where the evidence base is heterogeneous in study design, where concepts are still being defined, or where the goal is mapping rather than pooling — common in health policy, implementation science, and rapidly evolving clinical areas.

How long does a scoping review take?+

Typically 8–14 weeks depending on the breadth of the research question, the volume of literature identified, and the complexity of the charting and mapping required.
